The Review: Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm

Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in Stricking

I had been anticipating the release of the Revlon ColorBurst Matte and Lacquer Balms, and thought I would pop into my local Boots a few days earlier in the chance they might have put some stock out early. Luckily they did, and I stood for a good 10 minutes swatching and pondering over which shades to choose from. I went for a matte bright red in the shade Stricking, because obviously I need another red lip product.

I know it is supposed to be a 'balm' but I just expected it to be a bit more opaque than it was. Despite the fact that the look of it is 'matte', I feel like the feel of it on the lips is more like a satin finish and didn't dry like a classic matte. It definitely isn't drying on the lips, however I do wish it sets quicker so that I could have built it up. When I went in for a second coat, it just moved around the first layer which left it a bit streaky. Because I needed to go out, I just dealt with it not looking 100%. However, I will say after 3 hours of driving to and walking round Lakeside it was still on my lips, and only came off when I stuffed my face with McDonalds on the way home.

I like this, but I don't love it and I don't think I will be buying another. I think the 'drugstore' cosmetics companies have really worn out this whole lip crayon phase, and it's about time they thought of something new.

Have you tried the new Revlon Matte or Lacquer Balms? If so what did you think?

  1. Seems strange to make a balm that's matte, they're not words I'd put together!
What a lovely colour though :)

    1. I think that's why it wasn't so good! The two just didn't work together..
      Thanks for reading :)

  2. I love the way you've taken these photos, so pretty!
And I agree with you, I think the drugstores are really milking this crayon phase. I went into Boots the other day with the hopes of buying most of the Matt balm shades, but didn't even buy one because I wasn't overly impressed with either the colours or the finish. Ah well, still managed to walk away £70 lighter (so many offers on...) - I'll be writing up a haul soon at some point this week on the products I purchased, would love for you to check it out :)

Definitely do a haul though, I'm sure I will need/want most of the things you purchased..

  4. I agree with Daniela, I love the way you've taken these photos! That's so disappointing that it isn't as good as you'd expected. I hate when that happens. I was waiting until I'd heard a few reviews to see whether or not I'd purchase, but I don't think I will because I'm far too familiar with what you've described: product not setting and trying to layer but just moving around the first layer. More hassle than it's worth. The swatch is an absolutely fabulous colour, but it's a shame it didn't transfer onto the lip like that!
Ah well, thanks for reviewing and saving me the purchase hehe!

  6. I haven't tried these before but I've heard so many incredible things about it. It's refreshing to hear something that isn't so perfect about it sometimes. I've been meaning to try these out but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I can't seem to decide on a shade!
